1972 Rapid City Flood, South Dakota

Historic USGS images Rapid City Flood: 09th to 10th Jun 1972. A rainfall of 380mm in 6 hours over this city surrounded by mountains resulted in the most detrimental flood in South Dakota history, and one of the deadliest and costliest floods in U.S. history: 238 deaths, over 1335 homes and 5,000 automobiles were destroyed (~$1billion as 2021 dollars). Date: These images are from the first day after the flood, 11th Jun 1972 . It still can be seen many homes spread by the margins, cars piled over each other, loads of mud. -Compare with actual images to see how most of those areas were later regulated as non-residential. 1938 New England Hurricane: Newport

This is one of the oldest USGS aerial images. That devasting hurricane hit the US from 21 to 23 of September, 1938. It was one of the deadliest and most destructive tropical cyclones to strike the east coast. What we see from the image here is all already cleaned, after many constructions on the beaches were wiped out. Easton's Beach (middle-north of image) and Bailey Beach (south of image) were completely devasted. -Compare with actual images and old images of the event.
