Historic USGS images Rapid City Flood: 09th to 10th Jun 1972. A rainfall of 380mm in 6 hours over this city surrounded by mountains resulted in the most detrimental flood in South Dakota history, and one of the deadliest and costliest floods in U.S. history: 238 deaths, over 1335 homes and 5,000 automobiles were destroyed (~$1billion as 2021 dollars). Date: These images are from the first day after the flood, 11th Jun 1972 . It still can be seen many homes spread by the margins, cars piled over each other, loads of mud. -Compare with actual images to see how most of those areas were later regulated as non-residential.
