Berdychiv, Ukraine, declassified
by Map Lover
Berdychiv, city, northwestern Ukraine. Founded in 1482 as a Lithuanian fortress, Berdychiv was Polish from 1569 until 1793. The 16th-century fortress walls survive, as does the Roman Catholic church in which the French novelist Honoré de Balzac married Eveline Hanska, a wealthy Polish widow, in 1850 after an 18-year courtship. In the 19th century Berdychiv developed into an important centre of trade and light industry; it became for a time the fourth largest city in Ukraine. During this period the city’s population was predominantly Jewish, and the Hasidic movement was prominent. Among Berdychiv’s enterprises have been engineering works, a sugar refinery, a tannery, and clothing factories; it is also a railway junction. Cherkasy, Ukraine, declassified
by Map Lover
Cherkasy, city and administrative centre, central Ukraine. It lies on the high right bank of the Dnieper River, along the reservoir created by the Kremenchuk hydroelectric station. Founded in the 14th century as a fortified city in the Ukrainian lands under Lithuanian rule, Cherkasy became a part of the Polish realm in 1569. It served as a frontier outpost against Tatar raids, and its population consisted mainly of Ukrainian Cossacks. Cherkasy came under Russian control in the first partition of 1772 and received town status in 1795. It began to expand significantly in the late 19th century. Modern Cherkasy developed rapidly in the 1960s, when a chemical industry supplemented the older machine, food-processing, and furniture industries.
